What benefits have I gotten from training at Wujido? I could answer with only changes the training has made on me physically, but I feel that the training I received has slowly been changing me mentally as well.
My fitness level after high school went downhill fast. With no meaning given to running or lifting weights there was little purpose in exercising. Once I started training at Wujido a purpose was given to my exercise, to become competent in kung fu. The first couple months were very difficult I wanted to quit or sit in the back of the class everyday. If it were not for the mental changes that were at times forced on me I would still feel that way.
While the training is not competitive I sometimes felt that I should be able to keep up with the older men and women in class. I would look at the front of class and see a man or woman pushing their bodies harder than I could. I had a hard time understanding why a young man in pretty good physical condition could not keep up. Once I got my yellow belt I found that while I was pushing my body I had to drag my mind kicking and screaming after me. This was evident through the level three changes stance, where constant movement without thought will lead to nothing productive. Also, while trying to hold certain stances, I found myself giving into pain too easily and quickly. Thinking through my problems I found my kung fu brothers and sisters were pushing their minds and with little effort their bodies followed. The mind can still be weak even if the body is strong. This is the lesson I take from every class that while I can and have pushed my body to far my mind has potential I have not touched yet.
So, while I feel more comfortable going out on the night with my girlfriend and sister, and have more confidence in myself, this is only a side effect to my training. I value my training because it connects my mind to my body and gives control of my body to my mind.
